With vineyards throughout the Pacific Northwest, Owen Roe, named after a 17th century Irish patriot who dedicated his life to political equality and freedom, is owned and run by Jerry Owen and David O'Reilly (winemaker). Their aim is to source only the very best fruit from top sites in Oregon and Washington, handle it gently in the winery, and produce wines of superior balance and quality. O'Reilly is meticulous in his attention to detail from the vineyard to the bottle, and his hard work and dedication show through in the final products. They believe that great wine is fundamentally tied to fabulous fruit. So spending time in the excellent vineyards sourced from the Willamette, Mid-Columbia, Yakima Valley, and Walla Walla Valleys with careful attention to soil, weather conditions, plant physiology and exceptionally low yields are some of the most important 'winemaking' works they acomplish. This allows Owen Roe to harvest fruit at it's delicate peak of aromatic David, one of twelve children growing up in Belfast during the “troubles” was shipped off to America basically to spare his life as he lost siblings during that terrible time, holds a degree in medieval philosophy from Thomas Aquinas College but entered enology school at UC Davis. He worked very successfully as an assistant winemaker with the folks at Elk Cove and is the mastermind behind the Owen Roe, O’Reilly’s, and now Corvidae labels, and worked diligently with his past partner, Peter Rosback (of Sineann) and currently with his partner Jerry Owen, the Pacific Northwest’s preeminent vineyard man. To Church Street Wine Cellars Friends & Family,
In addition to our previous offering of Champagne Bollinger & Champagne Bruno
Paillard, CSWC has scrounged some additional discounts out of our suppliers that we are passing on to our ‘e-mail list only’ friends.
Casanova considered it “an essential tool of seduction”, Coco Chanel only drank it on two occasions “when I am in love, and when I’m not”, and Mme. Lily Bollinger confessed "I only drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and I drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it, unless I'm thirsty."
The wine to which they all refer is, of course, le Champagne vrai, from la
Champagne.
If there were ever a year for which its ending should be celebrated, 2009 gets our vote! But, hey, it looks like we made it, there’s light at the end of the tunnel, and hope springs eternal. What better way to ring out (and wring out) this year than with a fine, artisanal Champagne. To make that easier to swallow (both literally and figuratively) we’ve have a very exciting Champagne offer!
Suppliers are cutting deals for exceptional discounts, and then CSWC is cutting our own margins to the bare bones. The results are dramatic. The one proviso to all of this, however, is quantity. The prices quoted in the attached offering are based on our
suppliers being able to order certain minimum quantities. The quantities are indeed
Reasonable, but should only a few cases of one wine or another get ordered, we will not be able make the sale to you. But we know we can do it! For as Napoleon said “In
victory you deserve Champagne, in defeat you need it.”
Take a look at the offer and let us know your wishes as soon as possible. In any case, we are extending our previous closing date until November 12th. No orders can be accepted after that date. Delivery will be made during the week of December 14. Pre-ordering
after all has its price privileges!
Some additional Champagne offers, to order, just drop us an e-mail with your wishes info@churchstreetwinecellars.com

Many people like Champagne, but many don't realize that it is a great match for your holiday table, especially the fuller-bodied styles which are dominated by red grapes of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. CSWC has slashed our margins to the bone to give you the best pricing we can on these great wines so you may have them in time for your holiday table! Champagne BollingerBollinger ferments all wines originally in oak casks and uses a higher proportion of reserve wines in their blends than almost any other house. Bollinger also uses only the first pressing, where many other houses reserve this practice for only their 'tete-de-cuvee'. They own about 345 acres which provides them with about 70% of their needs, most 'grandes marques' houses only own 15-40% of their sourced vineyards. A superior set of wines, round, ripe, full-bodied and toasty...a classic house which has never compromised. Champagne Bollinger "Special Cuvée" Brut NV Reg. $83.99 CSWC price: $44.99 Save $39 bottle! 94 Points Wine Enthusiast, Editors Choice
"The Bollinger style is always rich, food friendly and impressive. This wine is all of those things, with power and intensity of flavor along with ripe fruit, a layer of toastiness and a dry aftertaste. This is a style of wine that can take even more bottle aging." 93 The Wine News; 93 Wine Spectator; 92 Wine & Spirits; 89 Steven Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Bollinger "Special Cuvee" is a blended wine to reflect their particular house style. The style is dominated by black grapes for body and its biscuity texture, traditionalists through and through. Generous peach, honey and fig flavors indicate this French bubbly is wonderfully mature, yet will only benefit from aging. What? Aging Champagne? Yes! We can't emphasize enough how well Bollinger ages...you will be well-rewarded by putting a few bottles down for a few years! It shows great balance and long finish with a yeasty, toasty oak, bread dough nose with great richness. Very versatile, excellent with appetizers, even substantial foods like red meats. Bollinger Brut Rose NV Reg. $105.99 CSWC price: $58.99 Save $47 bottle! The last remaining independent Champagne house, Bollinger comprises over 150 hectares of vineyards. Founded in 1829 by Jacques Bollinger and two friends, and the estate has been run by members of the Bollinger family ever since. Following Jacques' death in 1941, his wife Lilly took over and expanded the estate purchasing more vineyards and introducing the wonderful wine to fabulous parties and discerning drinkers all around the world. It is the champagne of choice of the infamous James Bond! Bollinger has since become one of the most respected and consistent of champagne houses, producing full bodied champagnes with great longevity and grace. This gorgeous new edition, the first in 30 years, is very rare and a must for lovers of high quality rose Champagne!
Bollinger "Grande Annee" Brut 1999 Reg. $143.99 CSWC price: $89.99 Save $54 bottle! Wine Enthusiast 96, Wine Spectator 94, The Wine News 94, International Wine Cellar 89, Wine & Spirits 90 This is top fizz! Bollinger produce incredibly high quality Champagnes following traditional methods. They age their wines longer than most other houses, allowing them to develop in a natural way which tends to produce more character. All Grande Année Champagnes must spend at least five years of time ageing on their lees in the bottle before they are ready. This means that they must spend a several years sitting in the bottles with all the sediment before it can be removed by a process of disgorgement and replaced with a little bit of sugar or dosage. In the case of Grande Année Champagnes they are riddled by hand, a process which requires the bottles to be lightly shaken every few days as they sit at a 45 degree angle on their lees. The shaking and tapping helps to encourage the sediment to settle at the neck of the bottle to prepare it for disgorgement. Naturally, this is cost and labor intensive, but the result is ultimately a remarkable one which can be tasted when the Champagne is ready to be drunk. Champagne Bruno Paillard Bruno Paillard "Première Cuvée" Brut NV Reg. $56.99 CSWC price: $36.99 Save $20 bottle! "Since he created his company in 1981, Bruno Paillard has become an important force in Champagne, owning a number of other brands. But his top wines are made under his own name; they go for finesse and elegance. This bottling also has a touch of mature, toasty acid flavors. The bottles carry the year of disgorgement.'' - 92 Points Wine Enthusiast
"An elegant and slightly yeasty nose that is quite fine and leads to detailed, intense, crisp and savory flavors that possess good richness and this does not thin out or stop short on the finish. Very solid quality at this level and it will certainly offer several years of in-bottle improvement if you enjoy aging non-vintage cuvées." - Allen Meadows in Burghound; 90 POINTS + NOW "the quality of his flagship Première Cuvée is indisputable" - Decanter The Wine Advocate This wine was recommended, but no tasting note was given. Score: 90 Points. - Robert Parker Its delicate hue comes from to the first pressing only. The fine bubbles are due to a very noble raw material, a perfectly controlled temperature in the cellar - cool and steady- and to very long ageing in bottle. The first aromas reveal the citrus character of Chardonnay: lime, grapefruits, but then red fruit aromas come out: redcurrant, raspberry, morello cherry - typical Pinot Noir. On leaving the wine to open up, candied fruits, even exotic fruits of Pinot Meunier appear with aromas of banana and pineapple. The palate is lively, thanks to the low dosage respecting the wines authenticity. The nose is confirmed by the first taste, citrus, almonds, toasted bread and "brioche" but also redcurrant jelly, then dark fruits - cherry, fig or blackberry. On being aerated and warmer, the wine reveals the light taste of plum and pear. The palate is full, quite long, with a very clean finish. Elegance - but not without complexity - this wine perfectly illustrates what we call Bruno's "house style". Bruno Paillard "Première Cuvée Rosé" Brut NV Reg. $76.99 CSWC price: $51.99 Save $25 bottle! Bruno Paillard started this young Champagne house in 1981, at the time it was the first new champagne house in over a century. He knew that in the middle of the big conglomerates there was room for a small house with a specific style, a pure commitment to quality, and some necessary innovations.
This rosé is produced from first pressing only. Pinot Noir makes up 85% of the blend, supplemented by a touch of Chardonnay (15%) to add elegance to the fruit of the Pinot Noir. The Rosé Première Cuvée is presented in clear bottles to show its delicate salmon hue. "Peach skin color. Zesty citrus, cherry pit and white pepper aromas, with a dusting of talc-y minerals. Deep, powerful blood orange and marzipan flavors are given energy and focus by firming acidity. Finishes spicy and persistent, with excellent freshness and nerve." - 90 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar "The wine immediately offers up enticing scents of peaches, apricots and cherries. It's a full, fruit-powered Champagne that's round and rich and unusually ripe. It delivers a lot of flavor up front, and holds there through a clean finish." - 90 Points Wine Enthusiast Bruno Paillard has remarkable vineyards: The winery owns 62 acres in some of the best viticultural areas of the appellation, with an unusually high 40% classified as "Grand Cru" (fewer than 10% of all Champagne vineyards are Grand Cru). Sustainable agriculture is applied, at great effort, to the 40 different parcels into which the holdings are divided. Extraordinary attention to detail define the cellar care. Selection of the best grapes: every year many of the grapes -grand crus or not -are sold off if they do not meet the winery's standards.
Only the first gentle pressing is ever used for all Bruno Paillard Champagnes.
Each "cru"is vinified separately in tank or barrel to allow a better selection during the blending. Depending on the characteristics of the year, reserve wines make up 20-50% of the blend. Aging is at least 2-3 times beyond AOC requirements (it can reach 15 years). A minimal dosage is added since the house philosophy is to accentuate the
fruit purity from the high-quality grapes. The total production of Bruno Paillard is limited to around 45,000 cases. In 1985 Bruno Paillard became the first producer to note the disgorgement date on the back label of each of his wines.
This remarkable Champagne will bring you back for more!

...and it earned another Gold Medal in the 2009 San Diego International Wine Competition, besting among others the: 2004 Jarvis Vineyards "Lake William Blend", at $115 bottle Meritage wine is a winemaker's dream. It is (or should be) a never ending quest to put together the "perfect" blend. These wines are the perfect vehicle to try and do just that. While a Cabernet Sauvignon needs to taste like a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Merlot needs to taste like a Merlot, there is so much more flexibility in regards to flavors and style with this wine. It is really the very best blend they can put together using two or more of the eight approved varietals recognized by the Meritage Association. Furthermore, no one varietal can exceed 90% of the blend. So they are forced to create a mixture that's layered and complex by the very nature of its makeup. Hahn Estates Meritage is just such a wine. They used Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc as we have for the past three vintages to craft a wine that is unmistakably Bordeaux yet difficult to define. This wine is bursting with ripe fruit flavors but has plenty of tannins and structure to give it aging potential.
And with an energy, power, and intensity that bested some of California's Classic Cult Cabernets - wines up to 150% above the cost of today's offer! Normally $17.99 a bottle today we are offering this wine for only $15.99 (and case discounts apply). 2007 Hahn Estate Red Meritage Central Coast, California (Bordeaux Blend) Plum color to the eye with hints of toast on the nose. On the palate deep red confited cherries enrobed with toasty oak. With time a hint of tobacco emerges, lending a savory note to balance the fruit. Wondrously complex - especially for a bottle so keenly priced! I'd expect this from a more expensive bottle - and at today's price the 2007 Red Meritage is a steal! Perfect for savory meats and hearty pasta dishes!

![]() Deep, Intense & Distinctive
Calvet-Thunevin Cuvée Constance VdP Cotes Catalanes, France 2005 $17.99 Grown on the parched and schistrous soils of Maury in the Agly Valley of the Roussillon, there is little more exciting than discovering a well priced, dry red wine value from fruit raised on slopes made black by metamorphic rock (incidentally also found in Catalonia's Priorat region, where it bears the name of licorella) tend to show a pronounced and distinctive minerality, a kind of layering akin to the slate itself. At their best, they are wines of powerful structure that brim with intense, distinctive flavors and still manage to remain light on their feet. There are aslo decadent Vin Doux Naturels of Grenache that are sinfully rich without being heavy and make wonderful dessert wines, but that is another story and price range. This particular wine, the Cuvee Constance of Calvet-Thunevin, comes with very fine curricula vitae. Jean-Roger Calvet of the Calvet negociant family worked at famed Mas Amiel, Maury's leading producer of astoundingly decadent vintage Muscat de Rivesaltes and Maury liquoreux. His contribution here consists in the meticulous management of about 25 acres of old, strictly pruned vines of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan grown on the garrigue-covered hills of the upper Agly. His partner is the notorious Jean-Luc Thunevin, better known if not as the originator (Thienpont at Le Pin and Mitjaville at Tertre-Roteboeuf got there first) then certainly as the lightning rod of the St. Emilion "garagiste" Bordeaux movement starting at his Valandraud estate. In the Constance, Thunevin's knack for ripe, concentrated, powerful wines is deliciously magnified by the mineral backbone conferred by the black soils of Maury. To order CLICK HERE '05 Calvet-Thunevin "Cuvee Constance" Vin de Pays des Cotes Catalanes $17.99
"The 2005 Constance (technically a "Cotes Catalanes" Vin de Pays) - consisting of Grenache with 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan - represents the only cuvee among the Calvet-Thunevin line-up not to be aged for 18 months in new barriques, but rather roughly half as long and exclusively in cement. Sweet and alluring aromas of creme de cassis and black raspberry jam lead to a palate of liqueur-like richness along with deep bitter chocolate and coffee as well as wet stone and lead pencil shadings. This excellent value offers an almost unprecedented amount of pure ripe fruit and resonance of finish for its price, and while it is successfully designed for impulsive (possibly even compulsive) consumption, it might well display more nuance with another year or two in bottle."
